The term pragmatism is derived from the Greek word pragma which indicates action, from which words like practice and sensible have been derived. Examples: Lawrence Kohlberg, James Rest, Thomas Lickona, Carol Gilligan, Mary Brabeck, Donald Elfenbein, William Damon, Robert Peck, Robert Havighurst and other folks. Then, later in history, philosophy became rather self-absorbed and focused a lot more on the believed processes and much less on concrete observation. I genuinely consider that there is no purpose for pure philosophy – except for the religious, of course, which I dismiss as nonsense. I’m in the approach of rediscovering what I like – I’ve often had an interest in Philosophy so I believed I must check it out. Hi Rafini-It sounds to me like you are in really an sophisticated class for a beginning philosophy student.
I was introduced to Philosophy at a young age and have constantly been curious about it – a lot of people close to me get sick and tired of my philosophical views. Philosophy really does look silly to me. Of course you will understand why I dismiss the religious elements as meaningless, but it’s much more than that. Somehow I came up with Cultural Relativism to imply that any given society determines what is proper/incorrect for that society.
Appropriate – ethnocentric also sounds like an additional word for discrimination, or the belief that ones own society is superior to another. If he produced statement I didn’t agree with I’d challenge him and remind him of that definition and that the purpose of a student attending college was to, not only be taught a topic, but to learn to think! These kinds of philosophy urges that conventional disciplines” and teacher centered philosophies” are implemented. The major job of education is the cultivation of higher values of life via moral and religious education.
In the study of educational philosophy we have learned that through the improvement of education and in each and every distinct classroom, teachers and programs could possess philosophical bases which form the teaching and system styles. Evaluating the distinct Westernized philosophies discovered in teaching which range from essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, existentialism, and others”, it is my contention that Egyptians had formed or adopted an academic philosophy that closely resembled that of essentialism and perennialism. In all, we can say that idealistic method to education has its own merits and shortcomings.
The value of cultural literacy was also prominent in the core curriculum” of these Egyptian trainees, and to make certain of this enculturation cultural book, suggestions, and concepts remained the cornerstone of the educational plan. Curriculum is the framework to determine and publicize what a school community believes is important for their students to know and be capable to do. It is important that these documents reflect capabilities, expertise and efficiency that will allow for our students to be effective in an ever altering, complex worldwide society. On religious and moral education, the definition of the absolute is unmistakably of theistic characteristics.
